the act of union:
The Act of Union was recommended by Lord Durham, which united Upper Canada and Lower Canada with the capital of Montreal in 1841. This created the Province of Canada. A united province was proposed by Lord Durham to develop a common commercial system with an overall English speaking majority. The Act established a single parliament with equal representation from each section now called Canada East and Canada West.
Canada after 1837:
After the Rebellions of 1837, immigration slowed down. However, the population of English surpassed the French. Because of this, French Canada became concerned that their language was under attack by the British government. As a result, politicians parties formed to defend their interests. British North America’s political structures will then undergo a reconstruction.
canada west:
Canada West, however, rapidly grew after the rebellions. Desperately poor with little education, many of the immigrants came from Ireland and Scotland. New roads linked towns and businesses began to grow. Toronto became a city with substantial buildings, businesses, and banks. However, the British government began to lose interest in its colonies. Laws that gave the colonies special benefit were cancelled and Britain refused to finance new projects. To raise money for the building of new ships, canals, and railways was now the Colonial government’s responsibility.
